Design Principles: Type and Grid (Continued//Developed2.)

From my first attempt of creating grid lines I thought that it would be useful to practice with other types of magazines and see what differences are portrayed. The use of doing this will help my knowledge and understanding of type and grid.

1. MAGAZINE INTERVIEW (SUNDAY TIMES):

With this double page spread it was quite difficult to highlight the non-obvious columns. There was also a large scale image on the left hand side of the dps. I used a red biro to highlight the grid lines because on my last attempt i used a pen that was to thick to create effective grid lines.

I notice that there were a lot of hidden columns instead of just the obvious interview block columns.

Sub Headings // Extracts and Bold type for the questions within the interviews created more grid lines around the dps. The use of this is so that the important information can be seen clearly.

The grid lines attached to the image page and war the same which is effective in knowing that magazines carry there own individual grid formats.

I also used the type measurement tool we were given in the sessions to get an idea on type size and how it fit into the grid system.

Here was the grid design i transferred from the magazine layout of the sunday times:
It is quite complicated and has a serious number of lines but it is unique to that magazine.

2. Magaizne Two : TV guide:

With this magazine i tried to look for a less complicated grid system. I used a green biro for this example to highlight the grid lines:

The grid system i four, was not as 'busy' as the previous but there were still obsticals to undertake. The use a block image with a series of numbers images inside was quite hard to tackle and i had to create more grid lines which added more to the overall dps.

Here is the final Grid lines i came up with:

I will use this grid to make further developments to Lorenzo's design task in which we have to create design sheets for grid  systems for dps. And highlight and change layouts within one system.
