INDESIGN AND COMMERCIAL PRINT
Once you send file off to get printed? What happens?

Recap:
BOOK: table of contents, massive files, significant no. of pages so open up new document. ]
Page size: Finished size, print. Set to production - No waste. If its a postcard, have a postcard size.
Columns and Margins : Only use if it useful to your page, consistency to detail, if you think they will be useful. They have no consequences for finished product - THEY ARE GUIDES, they will not cut off or trim final product.

BLEED AND SLUG: Anything that goes of the edge of the page should extend (bleed) off page, if trimming is inaccurate then you will have white edges if you don't do this.
ALWAYS INCLUDE BLEED MARGIN.

Slug area: sits outside your page that prints and within that area it will print" used for trim crop registration marks, 'Printers' markers. Lost once document is trimmed down but will print.

COMMERCIAL PRINT: Speak to printer before you start laying out - conversation on paper stock, spot colour libraries, how much bleed to include on layout, appropriate file format (how to submit work)
ASK THESE REQUIREMENTS/QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU START LAYING OUT.
STNDRD AMOUT : 3MM OF BLEED

Publication of facing pages : format of book, if yes, then facing pages, as document appears on screen it will be the same printed.

Start page number: if you have many pages and having numbering on documents - it will change where automatic numbering will start.

Primary Text Frame: Every page will have text frame already on it, each frame will be linked to the one on the next page. so if your working with numerous text or copy/paste, the text will automatically flow form one page  to another and if you have more text then pages pages will automatically be added.

DESIGN FOR PRINT : PAGE SIZE (SIZE YOU NEED IT) (ACTUAL SIZE)
THEN BLEED FOR COMMERCIAL PRINT.

PAGE LAYOUT:
BLACK: EDGE OF PAGE
BLUE: MARGIN

TO UNLOCK MASTER-PAGE ITEM: COMMAND SHIFT AND CLICK ON SHAPE AND DELETE. TO APPLY MASTER PAGE TO A PAGE DRAG THE NEW MASTER PAGE ONTO THE PAGE ON ICON PAGES.

APPLICATION OF COLOUR:

WHEN YOU APPLY COLOU RIN INDESIGN IT HAS TO BE WITHIN A FRAME, LIKE IN ILLUSTRATOR. FILL AND STROKE, COLOUR PALETTE, CMYK SLIDERS, USE SWATCHES PALETTE.

IMPORTANT CHECKLIST:

PHOTOSHOP TO INDESIGN

* CYMK OR GREYSCALE
* 300 DPI FOR PRINT
* IMAGES ACTUAL SIZE WE NEED THEM
* SAVE IMAGE AS PSD (TRANSPARENCY) OR TIFF

ILLUSTRATOR TO INDESIGN

* CMYK
* ILLUSTRATOR FILE (AI) OR COPY AND PASTE
* CAN SCALE ILLUSTRATOR ARTWORK

When placing an image into indesign, keep an eye of the links menu, keep all folders and images together. all images have to be there for it to print and work.

YOU CAN COPY AND PASTE FROM ILLUSTRATOR ARTWORK TO INDESIGN. SPOT COLOURS ARE STILL ADDED TO PALETTE.

Select the image (double circle) and then can change colour using spot colour on colour palette. If you right click image and click edit width you can edit image.

if you double click background colour on phototoshop you can delete white section. If you save as photoshop file the background will go transparent.

INDESIGN FILE ONCE IT GOES TO BE PRINTED:
colour separations:

window menu
output
separartions preview:

Print colour separation, used to create a printing plate, indesign is using colour channels to specify where the cyan prints in image or which ever one you chose. Looks like a positive screen print, print this out and use the cyan ink so it could be easier.

USE SEPARATION PREVIEW TO DOUBLE CHECK HOW MANY INKS THERE IS ETC.

print > output> composite pints/ to print positives the output is changed to separations, once you chose this you then have a section with all of the inks that you saw in separation priiew, all inks there are produced. print button to the left so of you don't wana output some positives then you can uncheck that. USE HALFTONE INFO NEXT TO INK SELECTION.

HALFTONE : IS A GRID OF DOTS TEH SPCING OF DOTS IS REFEREED TO AS FREQUENCY ND IS MEARUSED IN LINES. SIZE OF DOTS DETERMINS THE TINT OF COLOUR. CYN BLK MGNTA YELLOW ALL IN DIFF ANGLES SO THEY DONT FALL ONTOP OF EACH OTHER.

overprinting: overlapping colours > when you look at seperation preiview and cyan postive, where yellow overlaps there is no cyan, so yellow over rides the cyan > BLACK BY DEFAULT WILL OVERPRINT >

TRAPPING > TO DO IWTH REGISTRATION > MAINLY APPLIED WHEN USING SPOT COLOURS > NOT OVERPRINTING BUT KNOCKING OUT >
