Print - Workshop 2 - Photoshop - Colour Modes

Working with photoshop, working with image, all details in title bar, for colour mode etc.
RGB is default colour mode, this applies the problem that it isn't the right colour mode for print, we need CMYK. There are broader spectrum of colour available on screen with RGB rather then represented with CMYK printed.

Gamut means the range, changing the mode will alter the brightness and saturation in order to print. By working in RGB you have more options but you work with some unprintable colours.

EXPERIMENT 1: RGB MODE IMAGE ONE

Turn on gammer warning, view > gammet warning > turn it on, they grey areas selected are the unprintable colours within image. Therefore i will get unexpected results when printed.

To adjust the image you could:

Go to image adjustments : Hue and Saturation
Levels > level slider, or birghtness and Contrast.
or you could convert to CMYK

To become more refined, YOU CAN JUST CHANGE THE GAMMET WARNING SECTIONS. You could create an adjustment layer (allows you to apply to specific areas.)

When you are on proof settings, the image is RGB but previews the CMYK print, so what is on screen is how it will print.

RGB is a smaller file to save!!!!!!! BUT

BEFORE YOU SAVE AND/or PRINT - CONVERT FROM RGB TO CMYK to place into INDESIGN ETC.

SWATCHES PALETTE IN PHOTOSHOP:

At the bottom you have foreground and background colour. This i show you know what you are 'filling in'. Swatches palette allows you to keep note of useful colours i need. To empty swatch palette hold alt key until scissors appear and then press each swatch to delete it.
Shortcut to resest for and background, to make sure they are black and white : D on keyboard.
To add new swatch use mouse over empty area of swatch palette and it will automatically create swatch from colour on forground box.
Save the swatch so that there is an empty swatch.

If you want to save palette for exchange then select that option in menu on swatches palette so you can use the palette in other software. Too create swatch make sure its in printable range, click on triangle on colour menu and photoshop will get you closest printable match.

Spot Colours:

Click on forground colour picker, then go to spot colour libary - for pantones etc...

DUOTONE : PHOTOSHOP > GREYSCALE IMAGE AND A SPOT COLOUR IS OVERPRINTED AND SPOT COLOUR ACCENTS THE GREYSCALES WITHIN GREAYSCALE IMAGE.

VIEW > GREYSCLE > DUOTONE > MONOTONR (REPLACE BLACK WITH ANOTHER INK // SPOT COLOUR)

ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS YOU CAN THEN GO BACK AND SELECT A DIFFENRT INK SO THAT THE IMAGE CAN CHANGE. USE DUOTONE CURVE TO ALLOW FOR THE ADJUSTMENT OF BRIGHTMESS AND CONTRAST.

OTHER WAY TO FORMAT SWATCH AND SPOT COLOUR:
every channel is different in each setting eg. cmyk and rgb etc ...

CHANNEL PALETTE:

x switches foregound and background.

Use the paint tool or fill, use accurate selections to fill in areas.

You can use this technic to add spot varnishes.
