Design For Print - Workshop 5

Design for Print Final Session:

Final Product > Information Pack > With all information from these workshops + print sessions.

Consideration / processes of Printing / Layout of booklets within Indesign > To digital outputting such as ISSUE and PDF's.

BOOKLET PRINTING

File > new document >  a4 > make sure facing pages is checked. > no. of pages determined by amount of content.  How your book will be bound will effect your no. of pages. For this project > we are going to do saddle stich binding (sewing . stapling along one edge).
Saddle stich binding method, how will it influence number of pages?
It has to be  multiple of 4 pages, each sheet has 4 pages printed onto it, 2 front, 2 back. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW BOOK IS GOING TO BE BOUND WHEN DESIGNING YOUR BOOKLET / NO. OF PAGES.

This type of spread that we see on screen > referred to as READERS SPREADS (appear as they will be as book is a finished trimmed and printed put together product.

PRINTERS SPREADS > how pages will be arranged on sheet of paper which will then be put toegther. So we need to understand how pages of book are going to be re-ordered from readers spreads to printers spreads > indesign will do this for us > we lay out on screen as it is how it will be seen > then when printing on print settings indesign will sort this problem out.

If not using indesign > to work out PRINTERS SPREADS > do a mock up, write numbers on each page > take apart > make a note as to which number is next to which number / page.

OR ....

Create a 2 column table, Right hand column and left hand column. Then place the 1st page (front cover).
Indesign will re-order the pages for us, although it is useful to be able to know ourselves maybe by making a mock up or by creating a two column table left and right and fill then column with the number of pages in the book. Page 1 is always the first on the right hand side, then zig zag left to right down the coloms. Keep going until you are halfway through your pages then work your way back upwards. Afterwards to work what will be printed on each page of paper divide the lists into groups of 4.

Master Pages : Add auto page numbering; each page should be based on the A-master page. To add numbering jut create text frame > type menu at top > insert special characters > markers > current page numbers > working on master page > so A will appear as it is number of page > go to preview > all left hand pages all have page number added.

Copy this using ALT key to the right hand page and then it will duplicate it and add numbers onto right hand side pages. When working with automatic page numbering > if you don't want the front cover to havepg. number on it, when you set up indesign documents > just below where you chose number of pages > click start page numbering > that default will start the number from page one > you can change this to either page 2 (e.g.) and it will automatically start numbering form there.
If i would want page numbering to start later, then i would select page in pages palette, using menu at the top, numbering and section options, I would then have to start a section at that point. would have to be clicked on page. Would start page numbering form page number 1 at this point. If you click ok, you will get an error message because page 1 is number 1, and i would like page 3 to be number 1, if this happens then you should change the style of numbering to roman numerals (or other example) IT HAS NOW STARTED from page number one on 3rd page, From this just REMOVE MASTER PAGE from the remaining pages that numbers are left.

Once content is added, we need to print :

FILE > PRINT BOOKLET > CHOSE THE TYPE OF BOOKLET > (GO THROUGH BINDING METHODS TO SEE HOW IT EFFECTS ORDERING OF DOCUMENT.

PRINT SETTINGS > PRINT BOOKLET - NO PREVIEW IN BOTTOM LEFT > GP THOUGH STANDARD PRINT SETTINGS > OPTIONS > PRINT BLANK PAGES ~ VERY IMPORTANT > THEN GO TO SETUP > CHOSE PAPER SIZE, IF PAGE SIZE IS A4 AND YOU HAVE BLEED YOU CANT PRINT 2 A4'S ON AN A3, IF YO DONT HAVE BLEED THEN THAT IS OK, BUT IF PRINTING A4 THEN IT NEEDS TO BE PRINTED ONTO AN A2 SHEET >

PAGE POSITION > DOUBLE SIDED > MUST ALWAYS BE CENTRED. ALWAYS. IF YOU HAVE BLEED THEN YOU SHOULD ADD MARKS / BLEED.
GO TO PRINTER OPTION > DOUBL SIDED

BINDING ALONG SHORTEST EDGE OF PAPER THAT COMES OUT OF PRINTER > LAYOUT > SHORT BINDING EDGE > LONGER > THEN LONG EDGE BINDING. ALWAYS CLICK TWO-SIDED TO MAKE SURE DOUBLE SIDED PRINTS OUT.

CLICK OK, THERE IS A WARNING THAT IT DOEST FIT PAPER SIDE > THIS IS BECAUSE OF BLEED.
GO TO PREVIEW AND DOUBLE CHECK YOUR DESIGNS :

THEN CLICK PRINT > AT IT SHOULD ALL BE CORRECT.
THIS IS FOR A PRINTER THAT ALLOWS YOU TO PRINT AUTO ON DOUBLE SIDED.

IF THE PRINTER CANNOT AND YOU HAVE TO TURN IT AROUND AND PLACE BACK INTO PRINTER THEN > WE WILL CONVERT TO PDF FOR HELP. SOME COMMERCIAL PRINTERS ARE PREFERRED TO LIKE A PDF VERSION NOT INDESIGN VERSION, BECASE IT WILL NEED TO BE MANUALLY TURNED AROUND.

PRINT > PRINT PREVIEW > POSTSCRIPT > IS THE LANGUAGE THAT YOUR DIGITAL FILE IS CONVERTED TO WHEN YOU PRINT > POST SCRIPT FONTS AND TRUE TYPE FONTS > LIKE PDF FILE >

SELECT POST SCRIPTS FILE ON THE PRINTER OPTIONS > AND THEN ADOBE ON THE PPG
IT CAN BE ANY SIZE UPTO A0 > THE PRINTER OPTION WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE BECAUSE IT IS BEING SAVED FOR ANOTHER TIME > YOU CAN ALSO ADD CROP MARKS ETC.
> THEN CLICK PRINT > A FILE WILL THEN BE CREATED ON TEH COMPUTER > SAVE AS NAME ETC > FILE CREATED IS .PS > VERY MUCH LIKE PDF WILL CONTAIN ALL FONTS / LINKED IMAGES ETC.

OPEN IT IN PREVIEW (FROM HOME FOLDER) BY DOUBLE CLICKING ON IT > PREVIEW CONVERTS POSTSCRIPT FILE INTO PDF FILE, THEN YOU HAVE SPREADS > TAKE POST SCRIPT FILE TO PRINTERS > FRONT BACK > FRONT BACK PRINTS.

.
Using issue :

Sign up / for pdf's, upload pdf's, when exporting to use in issue > save your designs as pdf's > indesign/photoshop etc > don't have to re-order just output as pdf > save as smallest file size pdf  ONLY FOR INTERNET > once output and uploaded. you can then have possibility to embed pdf into website / blog. copy and paste code into blog / website / establish link for resource such s blogger / tumblr, then you get preview of how it will appear in your blog.
Can export as JPEG > and place onto blogger > file > export > JPEG / PNG image formats > Export > range 2-3 > click spreads > chose to add own trim marks onto the page.
